About Us

Step Beyond is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to prison reform, reentry, reimagining, and rebuilding communities by fostering a culture of rehabilitation, reintegration, and support. We firmly believe that everyone deserves a second chance at life. Our multifaceted approach encompasses various programs and initiatives that address the challenges faced by incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals, with the goal of breaking the cycle of recidivism and creating a more just and inclusive society.

One of our primary objectives is to provide participatory defense training that empowers and equips individuals and their communities with knowledge, skills, and strategies to actively engage in their own defense against the criminal justice system.

Additionally, we recognize the crucial role that mental and emotional well-being plays in the rehabilitation process. Through our comprehensive counseling and healing sessions, formerly incarcerated women have access to support networks that assist them in addressing the underlying issues contributing to their incarceration. Our emphasis on holistic healing and personal growth is essential in preparing individuals for a brighter future.

Step Beyond also understands the importance of building stronger connections between incarcerated women and their loved ones. We actively facilitate family engagement programs, offering opportunities for regular and meaningful interaction that strengthen bonds and foster crucial support networks. Our focus on building and maintaining healthy relationships helps reduce feelings of isolation and promotes social reintegration upon release.

Collaboration is at the heart of Step Beyond's strategy. We work closely with The National Council and other nonprofit groups to create a comprehensive network of support systems. By bringing together various stakeholders, we amplify our collective impact, driving systemic change in the criminal justice system.

We are thrilled to bring Step Beyond's innovative approach to what different looks like through reimagining communities to New York City (Harlem). By addressing the root causes of incarceration, providing educational opportunities, nurturing mental well-being, fostering strong relationships, and promoting collaboration, Step Beyond aims to transform the lives of incarcerated and formerly incarcerated individuals while contributing to a safer, more compassionate society for all. Together, we can go beyond the confines of the past and build a brighter future for everyone.
